Idro in Milan asks you for help
We are the 20 families who immediately after Christmas holidays will be evicted from the regular roma camp of via Idro in Milan in which we’re living regularly since 26 years. We are well included in the neighborhood in which we live, our children go regularly to school. Many of our ancestors during the Second World War were interned in Italian fascists concentration camps. We are Italian citizens and we do not understand why we have to leave our homes, why our children have to lose the school, their belongings, their friends.
ONE OF OUR HOMES
As an alternative solution the Milan municipality offers us the containers of the Social Emergency Centers and Housing Autonomy Centres where the municipality already host the families evicted from the slums (they should be put out on street and leave their place to us after our eviction from our regular homes). In any case, these are temporary, precarious structures (containers of 12-15 square meters for families of 4-5 or more people). We could stay there for mostly one year and in this year the municipality should offer inclusion. We have serious doubts that this could happen (no one roma family admitted to these centers in the last two years had a job or a house and they ended up on the street). Finally, who rejects the Emergency Centers would only have the forced eviction, the destruction of his house with all his stuff.
MUNICIPAITY HOUSING AUTONOMY CENTER : CONTAINER AND THE COMMON KITCHEN
At last we only have as real perspective insecurity, loss of dignity and especially loss of the future of our children.
“Overcoming the roma camps” must be a shared decision with the roma families and must aim to solve the problems not to make them worst. It can not be only the closure of camps and the deportation to temporary centers without any certainty for the future.
Almost 6 million of public money spent in Milan for the “Roma issue” in the last two years did not provide any advantage for Roma communities, because they were used only for evictions, emergency centers and their management.
We ask the Milan municipality not to destroy our homes until there are no concrete housing and job solutions for us. Only then it make sense to close the Roma camp in via Idro, like any other camp: giving the perspective of improvement of living conditions to the people.
We ask you to support us in our efforts to maintain our dignity, to help us not to lose everything, not to be forced to start our lives all over again, using a few minutes of your time and writing an e-mail until January 10th. to the Mayor of Milan.
Thank for supporting.
